Ella and Micha have been best friends since they were kids. But one tragic night shatters their friendship and their lives forever.

Ella used to be a rule-breaker with fiery attitude who wore her heart on her sleeve. But she left everything behind when she went to college and transformed into someone that follows the rules, keeps everything together, and hides all her problems. But now it’s summer break and she has nowhere else to go but home.

Ella fears everything she worked so hard to bury might resurface, especially with Micha living right next door. If Micha tries to tempt the old her back, she knows that it will be hard to resist.

Micha is sexy, smart, confident, and can get under Ella’s skin like no one else can. He knows everything about her, including her darkest secrets. And he’s determined to bring his best friend, and the girl he loves back, no matter what it takes.

Ella has a secret – she is not the girl her roommate Lila thinks she is. The second it was possible, Ella took off from her home town and fought to hide everything about her, everything that made her the girl who Micha loves. When summer break happens, and Lila drives Ella home, Lila quickly finds out that the introvert she has roomed with for the past 9 months isn’t the girl Ella has pretended to be at all. Micha has spent the past 9 months searching for Ella everywhere – despite the disastrous events that have happened in Ella’s life, he’s completely in love with her. Or the girl she was. Ella is determined not to let being back home change her back to the girl she was, but being around Micha makes that nearly impossible. With their history, and her draw to Micha, all her secrets soon come pouring out.

I confess that I only heard about The Secret of Ella and Micha about a week ago when Megan messaged me about how well it’d been doing on Amazon. Unable to resist a young adult romance for the mere 99 cents it was/is, I snapped it up and read it all in one sitting. While there is nothing world-shaking about Ella and Micha’s tale, the way it slowly reveals the person that Ella used to be with Micha and what had happened in their past made me keep reading until the end. Ella was a character that I grew to appreciate throughout the story, however Micha was the real winner for me. Determined to bring back the girl he fell in love with and for her stop hiding behind the shell of a girl that she certainly is not, he can’t let her go now that he’s found her. The story alternated between scenes being told from Ella or Micha’s points of view, with Ella and Micha genuinely feeling like unique characters and not just two different angles for the story to be heard from.

I have two faults however, one being that Ella’s… best friend(?) Lila came off as somewhat shallow. I kept expecting Lila to call Ella on all the lies she’d told to Lila for the past couple months and was disappointed to see if sort’ve just slide under the radar. Lila seemed to popup when an extra character was needed for a scene and be conveniently stored off to the side when it was Ella and Micha time. My other fault is that the ending to The Secret of Ella and Micha felt very abrupt, with one of the characters suddenly making a decision and summer was up when it felt like it hadn’t been mentioned approaching before. Aside from these faults though, The Secret of Ella and Micha is a good guilty-pleasure read for bedtime, with R-rated romance scenes occurring. Releasing today, is the second half of Ella and Micha’s story, The Forever of Ella and Micha.
